Friends, I wrote this post before the news broke that the White House ordered bombs dropped on Iran. I’m still shaking in outrage at the news. I hope you find something in this post to ground and inspire you. I’m going to do some deep breathing, light a prayer candle, then call and email my representatives. Here’s Indivisible’s page for contacting our Senators, if you’d like to do the same. Thank you for being here.

“Ask for what you need and offer what you can.”

- Christina Baldwin, The Seven Whispers: A Spiritual Practice for Times Like These

Dear Ones,

The quote above from one of my favorite books by my friend and mentor Christina Baldwin encapsulates one of the most potent ways for us all to live right now. The phrase keeps coming to mind as I navigate the energies of celebrating Summer Solstice at the same time that I’m devastated daily by the news.

Community has always been important to me, whether it’s in-person or online community. When I created the Gaian Tarot, I followed the lead of the Motherpeace Tarot and made all the Sixes cards of community. We followed the same pattern with the Herbcrafter’s Tarot — the Sixes in that deck are cards of community, too.

“In the sixes, friends gather to greet a new day, drummers and dancers raise energy by a festival bonfire, sisters circle in the gentle waves of Mama Ocean, and money is exchanged for flowers and vegetables at a farmer’s market.

The six in each suit depicts a generative experience shared with others. They express the qualities of community, reciprocity, and peak experience in their respective elemental suits.”

— from the Gaian Tarot companion book by JPC

It seems to me that celebrating community is one of the best ways to honor the peak of power at Summer Solstice, just as celebrating solitude is a keynote at Winter Solstice.

Let’s take a look at the Sixes in the Gaian Tarot. Which one resonates the most for you right now?

The community awakens and sings up the sun together with prayer, song, and drumming. As we gather with others of like mind at festivals or on retreat, we gain perspective and insight into the big, soulful issues of our lives. As we set our intention together in ceremonial space, the power to change our personal and collective lives is magnified many times over.

Remember: Purpose and perspective are found in serving your community.

It’s festival time! With nightfall comes the lighting of the bonfire and the arrival of drummers and dancers. The energy builds until it reaches a blazing peak of creative and erotic power, and we are entrained and entranced. Together we fan the flames of the sacred fire. We raise a cone of power and release it—and are left utterly transformed.

Remember: Revel in celebrating yourself and your people.

Friends gather together to celebrate the peak of summer as sunset falls on the longest day of the year. They are naked and innocent, with hearts wide open to embrace each other. They weave a sensuous, spellbinding web of love and pleasure as they sing “we are the flow, we are the ebb . . .” They slip between the borders of earth and sea, night and day, human and seal—to the place where magic begins.

Remember: Embrace the comfort and pleasure of the company of friends.

Six of Earth

At a local farmers’ market, vendors and customers exchange energy in the tangible form of money for goods. We buy our greens and carrots from the farmer who lives down the road, and in doing so we support her commitment to farming organically and sustainably. In return, we receive fresh and delicious foods that nourish our bodies and spirits. Sometimes we get stories with our groceries—of the toddler who helped pick those golden flowers, of the big rain that almost wiped out the tomato crop, or of long days spent in fragrant lavender fields. This is shopping that feeds the spirit as well as the body.

Remember: Appreciate and support the work of others, just as they support and appreciate you.

(Text above for each card is quoted from the Gaian Tarot companion book by JPC.)

Journal Questions

Make a list of the different communities you’re part of, online and offline. These might be spiritual groups, political groups, place-based (local), or focused on a special interest like tarot, tai chi, music, herbcrafting, writing, or making art.

Choose one or more of these communities and pull a tarot or oracle card to spark a response to these questions?

  • How can I nurture my community?

  • How might I offer what I can?

  • How can I ask for what I need?
